Managing patients with unscheduled bleeding on hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
Endometrial cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women, with abnormal uterine bleeding the most common presenting symptom.
However, abnormal uterine bleeding is also a common symptom experienced by those who have recently started to use HRT, or have recently changed their HRT. It can affect up to 38% of people using sequential HRT and 41% using continuous combined HRT. Clinicians are faced with the challenge of distinguishing those women with cancer who require urgent treatment from those who can be quickly reassured and discharged.
To support health professionals in their decision-making, we have produced a toolkit of information and further education. This toolkit has been produced in partnership with multidisciplinary stakeholders across the Cancer Alliance footprint, from both primary and secondary care. It should be read alongside the British Menopause Society guidelines on the management of unscheduled bleeding on HRT
The toolkit also contains resources to support discussions with patients on HRT who present with unscheduled bleeding.
